Midnapore SP shunted out: PTI

The West Bengal Government Wednesday replaced Midnapore Superintendent of Police Gaurav Dutta by A K Maliwal, SP, South 24-Pargans, in a major shake-up of the police set-up, in an apparent concession to the Trinamul Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party demand for his removal from the trouble-torn district.

An official release said that Dutta was transferred to the city police as its deputy commissioner (special branch-I).

Dutta's removal had been demanded by Opposition parties, particularly the Trinamul, BJP and Congress, following large-scale political violence at Keshpur, Garbeta, Pingla and other areas of Midnapore district, which claimed a number of lives and loss of property in the last one year.

The release said Deb Kumar Ganguly, deputy commissioner of city police (enforcement branch), replaced Maliwal.

In other changes, M K Singh, deputy commissioner (special branch-I) was transferred to the third battalion city police, Somen Mitra, deputy commissioner of police (north) to the post of police superintendent, Howrah, K L Tamta, deputy commissioner of Reserve Force to the post of deputy commissioner of police (north), besides Jayanta Basu, deputy commissioner of armed police to the post of deputy commissioner of police (reserve force).
