Thackeray's defamation case adjourned to Feb 6

A Correspondent in Bombay

The Bombay high court has adjourned the defamation case filed by Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray against Outlook newsmagazine till February 6, 2001.

Thackeray had claimed damages of Rs 1 billion from the magazine for publishing what he said was an article defamatory to his reputation.

The plaint cited certain portions of the article that had hinted at financial deals between Thackeray and film financier and diamond trader Bharat Shah.

Shah was recently arrested by the Bombay police on charges of ploughing underworld slush money into Bollywood, India's Hindi movie industry.

Thackeray's counsel Satish Maneshinde told rediff.com that Outlook submitted before the high court that it would not re-print the offensive portions of the article until the case was disposed of.
