CPI-M finalises strategy for assembly elections

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

The Communist Party of India-Marxist finalised its electoral strategy for the ensuing assembly elections in its bastions of West Bengal and Kerala in May.

Giving an outline of the strategy, which was finalised during the three-day central committee meeting in Bhubaneswar which ended Monday, CPI-M general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet said that the central committee has resolved to strengthen the unity of the left and democratic forces to take on reactionary forces.

"We have also resolved to further strengthen the unity of the Left Front and take all necessary measures for successfully facing the elections," Surjeet said in context of West Bengal, where the Left Front has been in office for 24 years having won five successive assembly elections with big majorities.

With reference to Kerala, the central committee decided that the unity of the Left Democratic Front should be strengthened and its political and organisational cohesion ensured, Surjeet said.

Surjeet said the importance of these elections is obvious. "The results of the elections will have a bearing on national politics too," he stated.

However, for the first time, the CPI-M feels threatened by the Bharatiya Janata Party in its bastions. The central committee admitted that in both states, the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh were trying to weaken left forces by joining hands with other political forces like the Trinamul Congress in Bengal.

The committee stated that in Bengal serious efforts were being made by rightwing forces under the leadership of the Trinamul-BJP combine to create a situation whereby the Left Front can be destabilised.

Similary in Kerala, it stated that the RSS has stepped up its murderous attacks on CPI-M leaders and workers in Kunnur district. "The aim is to create an atmosphere of violence and terror to discredit the LDF government on the eve of the elections and prepare the ground for collusion with the United Democratic Front," Surjeet said.

The committee made it clear in its electoral strategy that the party would highlight the achievements of its governments.

The policies of the Left Front in implementation of land reforms, defending the democratic rights of all citizens and maintaining communal harmony is known to all. "It is these pro-people policies which have enabled the Left Front to command, mobilise and sustain popular support in the face of continuous efforts to weaken it," the committee said.
