Four woodcutters hacked to death in Assam

Four Muslim woodcutters were hacked to death and two others seriously injured by ultras in Lower Assam's Nalbari district on Monday night, the police said in Guwahati.

Armed with axes and machetes, unidentified extremists entered the make-shift dwellings of the woodcutters at Bishnupur-Sankuchi village, under Nalbari police station, and hacked the four to death on the spot.

The injured were admitted to GMC hospital in Assam's capital.

Stating that the victims belonged to Sorbhog in neighbouring Barpeta district, the police said one of the injured persons is a local while the other is a woodcutter.

The sources said senior district civil and police officials were investigating the incident while the DIG (central western range) was camping at the scene.

The police suspect the area to be an ULFA bastion.
