Tamil Nadu assembly condones Tamaraikkani's punishment

The Tamil Nadu assembly decided unanimously on Monday to condone the remaining 13 days of simple imprisonment awarded to All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam member R Tamaraikkani in 1999 for assaulting Agriculture Minister Veerapandi Arumugham in the House.

A motion to this effect, tabled by Leader of the House and Education Minister K Anbazhagan, was adopted unanimously.

On March 23, 1999, the assembly had awarded 15 days of imprisonment to Tamaraikkani, following which he was sent to jail.

The Madras high court stayed the operation of the order after Tamaraikkani underwent imprisonment for two days. Subsequently, however, the court upheld the assembly's resolution.

Earlier, Speaker P T R Palanivel Rajan held a discussion with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on the matter. Karunandhi later suggested at a meeting of the business advisory committee that the remainder of Tamaraikkani's imprisonment be condoned.

Leaders of various political parties concurred with this.

The speaker then informed the House of this decision, following which Anbazhagan tabled the motion condoning the sentence.
