Bush inaugural address calls for unity

President George W Bush called for a new sense of unity after years of poison-pen politics in his inaugural address Saturday and challenged Americans to become more deeply engaged in the nation's civic life, CNN.com reported.

The roughly 15-minute speech made no direct reference to the hotly disputed Florida recount battle that led to his belated electoral college victory in December. Instead, he called for a sense of unity and common purpose under his leadership.

"I will live and lead by these principles: to advance my convictions with civility; to pursue the public interest with courage; to speak for greater justice and compassion; to call for responsibility, and try to live it as well," Bush said.
