Mosque murder case shifted to TN crime branch

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi Friday ordered transfer of the case relating to the murder of a man in a mosque in Tirunelveli district to the special investigation team of the state crime branch.

An official press release said the SIT would also probe the case relating to the burning of a shed inside a mosque at Tenkasi on January 13 and the murder of a person at Melapalayam on January 11 in the wake of desecration of idols in some temples.

Abdul Rasheed was hacked to death by some miscreants who also hurled country bombs at the mosque in Palayamkottai town on December 9.

District police on December 21 had claimed to have solved the case by arresting two persons, including the son of the victim, and saying that the murder was carried out due to a personal dispute involving the father and son.

However, the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam had rejected the theory and had been staging protests demanding that the case be transferred to the Special Investigation Team of the CB-CID. It had also announced a 'jail fill' agitation on January 23 on the issue.
