Masjid was deliberately demolished: Basu

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

Former West Bengal chief minister and veteran Communist leader Joyti Basu claimed that he has concrete evidence to prove that the Babri masjid was deliberately demolished in 1992.

"Iam going to give the evidence to the Liberhan Commission, which is probing the demolition," Basu said on Friday.

Basu told newspersons that he would appear before the commission on January 29. "I will make everything clear to the commission to prove my stand," he stated.

Basu is here for the Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo meeting in Bhubaneswar on Friday.

Basu said that he told Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee a few days back that he had evidence to prove his claim that the masjid was demolished with a clear intention.

Basu, without blaming the Sangh Parivar for the demolition, indirectly pointed an accusing finger at the Bharatiya Janata Party, by calling it 'barbaric' again.

"Even 53 years after Independence, prayer houses are demolished and minorities are living under a security threat, which nobody can believe happens in a democratic country like ours," he said.

Basu said that it was unfortunate that a party like the BJP had come to power at the Centre and was leading a coalition government, but was ruled by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

With reference to the formation of a third front, Basu said that they were still working on it. "I hope that it will take concrete shape after assembly elections in five states this year," he said.

He admitted that formation of a third front was difficult in the present political situation.

He said that he did not have any personal expectations. "I am communist. I will do what the party wants. I am for the party, serving people and I will continue to serve them till death," he said.

He reiterated that the Left Front headed by the CPI-M will retain power in West Bengal, adding that the Trinamul Congress had become a lost cause.

He said that the CPI-M would not support the Congress in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. "We will support Mulayam Singh," he said.
