Shah remanded to custody till Jan 22

Shah, facing allegations of links with Karachi-based gangster Chhota Shakeel to establish the rule of the underworld in Bollywood, was produced amid tight security before designated judge A P Bhangale at 11:30 hours IST.

The Bombay high court, hearing Shah's bail plea, had on Wednesday directed the investigating agency to seek his remand only up to January 22 as it had yet to deliver its verdict on granting liberty to the accused.

Accordingly, public prosecutor Rohini Salian pressed for his custody till that date. However, she made it clear that the prosecution had not consented to his custody till January 22, but was asking for it in keeping with the high court order.

Shah's lawyer Girish Kulkarni handed over a copy of the high court order to the designated judge.

The prosecutor then forwarded investigation papers to the judge and sought permission to seize the properties of two absconding accused (names held in camera). The judge allowed her plea to compel the presence of accused before the court.

The police had last month arrested Nazeem Rizvi, producer of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and his assistant Abdul Rahim Allah Baksh for alleged links with Shakeel.

Shah, who has financed the film, was also held. The trio was booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act on the basis of telephonic conversations with Shakeel.
