Hurriyat meet to discuss Pak trip afresh

Sumir Kaul in New Delhi

Hurriyat Conference Wednesday said its executive committee would meet in Srinagar soon to reconsider the decision to send a team to Pakistan to discuss the Jammu and Kashmir problem.

A spokesman said the Hurriyat Conference was disappointed by the delay in issuing passports to three of the five delegates chosen to travel to Pakistan.

Hurriyat had chosen five of its top leaders -- Jamaat-e-Islamia leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, People's League chairman Sheikh Abdul Aziz, People's Conference chief Abdul Gani Lone, Shia leader Maulana Abbas Ansari and former Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq -- for the Pak trip. However, barring Lone and Farooq, the other leaders haven't yet been issued their travel documents.

They meeting is likely to take place soon after Geelani and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yaseen Malik return to the valley.

Meanwhile, there were reports of Geelani having expressed his inability to travel to Pakistan citing health reasons. He called on the Pakistani high commissioner in Delhi recently and held prolonged discussions on the Union government's peace initiative in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a related development, Lone met Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and had a prolonged closed-door meeting with him. Though there was no word from either of the leaders, the insiders said Lone is drumming up support against Hurriyat's proposed Pak visit.
