India successfully tests Agni II: Report

India successfully test-fired a longer-range version of its Agni ballistic missile on Wednesday, the Star News television channel said.

It was the second test of the upgraded version of the Agni, which has a planned range of about 2,200 km (1,375 miles).

The first was held in April 1999, prompting tests within days by Pakistan of its medium-range Ghauri II missile.

"The missile, which was tested at 10 Wednesday morning (0430 GMT) at the Chandipur test range in (the eastern coast state of) Orissa, met all the mission objectives," Star News said.

It said the missile tested had a range of 2,000 km and could carry a one-tonne warhead.
