'PM keen to upgrade level of Indo-Pak talks'

An Indian non-government delegation, currently on a visit to Pakistan, has said that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is keen to upgrade the level of talks between New Delhi and Islamabad.

At a panel interview with the daily Jang in Islamabad, former Indian foreign secretary J N Dixit and another member of the delegation J Nath said Vajpayee had himself indicated that he was serious about resolving the differences between India and Pakistan.

The delegation was in Islamabad to attend a seminar organised by the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.

Nath said though Kashmir was a core issue between the countries, special attention should be paid to minimise the nuclear threat in the area.

The two Indian delegates were of the view that the leadership of the two countries must be cautious about extremist elements.

A consensus was reached at the seminar organised by the IPRI on Monday on increased dialogue between India and Pakistan to expedite meaningful efforts for a settlement of the issues with the stress on taking pragmatic steps towards reduction and restraint in nuclearisation of the two countries.

Participants at the open forum seminar from India included Admiral (rtd.) Raja Menon, Air Chief Marshal (rtd.) S K J Mehra and Prof Mateen Zuberi.
