Pakistani espionage ring busted, one held

Kamla Bora in Jaipur

Rajasthan Police has claimed to have busted an espionage ring by arresting a Pakistani national in Jaipur and recovered from him several defence-related documents allegedly procured through lower level army personnel.

The alleged spy Shahid Mohammad was nabbed by the police at the inter-state bus terminal of the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation at the Sindhi camp on January 14, police said in an official release.

Shahid who arrived in India using a valid passport and visa through the Attari border post in July last year was operating in Jaipur, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

Police said two brothers of the arrested person, one living in Nepal and another in Meerut, were also found to be involved in espionage activities.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that Shahid was a native of Meerut who got Pakistani citizenship after being recruited by the Pakistani intelligence agency in 1991 when he visited that country. He was given intense training for about two years before being sent back to India.

On arriving in India, he went to Delhi and from there to Meerut where his relatives live. He developed an espionage ring in different parts of the country using fake ration cards, opening bank accounts and securing accommodation for his accomplices.

The alleged spy used to secure information and documents about deployment, movement and training of the Indian Army and pass them to Pakistani intelligence officers in Karachi on telephone and fax using code language.

Police has identified the ISD-STD booths, which he used to frequent.

Police on Monday registered a case under the Official Secrets Act and secured remand from a local court till January 20.

He has been lodged in the cell specially set up for interrogation of espionage related suspects. The army has also been alerted about the matter.
