Seven killed in Bihar shooting

Soroor Ahmed in Patna

Seven people, including two local political leaders, were killed and 15 injured when motor-cycle borne criminals sprayed bullets at a political meeting in Rosera town of Samastipur district of north Bihar Monday night.

Though the meeting was called to discuss the coming panchayat poll, Bihar Director General of Police R R Prasad said the attack was the fall-out of a prolonged war of attrition between two criminal gangs.

One of those killed was Murari Prasad Singh, local leader of the Lok Janshakti Party of Ram Vilas Paswan. The vice-president of the Samastipur district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Hari Shankar Singh, was the other prominent person killed.

According to the DGP, gang rivalry between Murari Singh and another criminal, Fantoo Issar, led to the killing. Monday's attack was said to be in retaliation to the killing of two of Issar's men by Singh's men last month.

The assailants reportedly used AK-47 rifles in the attack.

Though the police is downplaying the political angle, the issue is likely to be politicised as Rosera, is the stronghold of the Lok Janshakti Party.
