Second setback as MQM quits
Pakistan opposition alliance

The MQM, which is a part of the 18-party Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, has been seeking apology from the Pakistan People's Party and Muslim League for atrocities committed on the workers of the movement when they were in power, according to BBC (Urdu).

The demand came at a time when a two-day convention of the ARD is in progress at Karachi. The convention is being held to mobilise public opinion in favour of restoration of democracy.

Alliance Chairman Nawabzada Nasarullah Khan termed the MQM demand as 'totally unjustified'.

The MQM, which joined the alliance in December, has been sore over PPP chairperson and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's description of the party as a terrorist organisation. It was upset about Bhutto's statement that during her tenure terrorism in Karachi was checked.

''During the Bhutto's term in office, thousands of MQM workers were killed while during the Nawaz Sharif's rule the party had to face a military crackdown,'' the party said.

The ARD suffered its first setback when Nawaz Sharif was set free and exiled. His Muslim League had joined the alliance just a few days before Sharif was forced into exile.
