Simultaneous polls in five states in April

Simultaneous assembly elections in five states will be held in the second half of April, Election Commission officials said Monday.

The polls will be held in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Pondicherry.

The tenure of assemblies in Tamil Nadu and Kerala ends on May 21 and 28 respectively, while the terms of West Bengal and Pondicherry assemblies expire on June 9 and that of Assam on June 11.

Sources said the commission is considering extensive use of electronic voting machines in view of their success in previous elections.
