Three killed in Patna encounter

Our Correspondent in Patna

A dreaded criminal Kaushal, alias Prince, and two of his accomplices were gunned down in an encounter with the Patna police Sunday evening. Three policemen and a shopkeeper were injured in the incident.

The incident occurred at Gardanibagh Government Colony.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar, three country-made pistols, ten live cartridges, a fake driving licence and a Maruti car were recovered from the site. The car belonged to the cousin of Central Bureau of Investigation Superintendent of Police Pravin Kumar, which was stolen a few days back.

Kaushal is said to be involved in several criminal cases, including the killing of the son of the owner of Bangalore Silk House, a prominent saree shop in Patna, a couple of years back.

The police got a tip-off that Kaushal was in the Gardanibagh locality. When a police patrol party tried to stop his car, it sped away.

The police vehicle gave chase and Kaushal's car slammed into a road-side kiosk injuring the shopkeeper. The criminals again tried to escape but their car hit a telephone pole.

According to the police, the criminals then began firing at the police party, who retaliated killing all three occupants of the car on the spot.

The encounter is the first major achievement of Patna police since the Director General of Police R R Prasad took over on December 14 last year.

The rising crime rate in the past few weeks had forced Prasad to patrol the streets of Patna himself on a number of occasions. The DGP was so upset with the situation that once he publicly berated SSP Sunil Kumar.
