Family of five in Ahmedabad
commits suicide

In a bizarre incident, all members of a family of five allegedly committed suicide at Shivani Apartment located in posh Satellite locality of Ahmedabad on Wednesday, city police sources said on Thursday morning.

The deceased were identified as stock-broker and businessman Garesh Gandhi (45), his wife Devinder Gandhi (44), their son Karthik (14) and daughters Hetal (20) and Aarti (17).

All five were rushed to the emergency ward of Vadilal Sarabhai Hospital in the evening by close relatives but they succumbed within hours of being admitted.

Primary investigations have revealed that the family had consumed Valium 5, a sleeping tablet, to end their lives.

Though no suicide note or documents have been found, the police have arrested a suspect Raj Jain alias Sanjay, state unit secretary of the National Students Union of India, on the basis of several signed letters addressed to Hetal, which were recovered from the house.

A case of unnatural death has been registered. A team of senior police officials along with experts from the forensic science laboratory are investigating the case, the police added.
