Jaya Jaitley re-elected Samata Party president

Jaya Jaitley was Monday re-elected the Samata Party president at the party's national council in Mysore on Monday.

Earlier talking to newspersons Defence Minister and Samata Party chief George Fernandes said there is no proposal before the party to merge with any outfit, including the Janata Dal (United).

Deep fissures have appeared in the party with one section of MPs pushing for an alliance with the JD (U) and the other opposing any such partnership.

Union Agriculture Minister Nitish Kumar, who favours a merger with the JD (U), has tendered his resignation from the Union Cabinet.

Speaking to reporters before the party's National Council meeting began its two-day session in Mysore, Fernandes maintained that the rebel MPs had not served him any ultimatum on the merger issue and that their arrival in Mysore was delayed due to foggy conditions in Delhi.

Samata Party rebels had said on Sunday that they would boycott the Mysore conclave.

Asserting that there was no crisis in the party, Fernandes said: "It (the crisis) is a media creation. In a political party, there can be differences of opinion on various issues, including organisational matters," he said.

On the election of the party president, he said two nominations were received but they had been withdrawn. He did not, however, name the aspirants who pulled out.

Fernandes said the National Council would pass a resolution on the Ayodhya controversy.
