PM rejects Nitish Kumar's resignation

Union Agriculture Minister Nitish Kumar's resignation was rejected by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, giving a new twist to the intra-party wrangling in the Samata Party, even as efforts continued for a patch-up between rival factions.

Defence Minister George Fernandes had earlier forwarded his resignation letter to Vajpayee, having failed to persuade the minister to withdraw it.

Kumar had sent in his resignation letter to Fernandes on Thursday amid bickering in the party.

''The letter has been forwarded to the prime minister most reluctantly,'' the senior Samata leader and NDA convener had said in a press release.

Fernandes said Kumar had written to him, expressing agony over the developments in the party with a request that it may be forwarded to the prime minister.

The defence minister said he had informed Vajpayee about the matter but withheld the resignation letter hoping that he would be able to persuade Kumar to change his mind.

Having failed in his efforts, he forwarded the letter to Vajpayee, Fernandes said.
