Toll in peacock deaths in Gujarat rises to 11

With the recovery of four more bodies from the forest area of Jambughoda in Panchmahal district on Thursday, the toll in the series of peacock deaths in Gujarat in the past week has risen to 11.

This has become a cause of concern for the state forest department and the bodies have been sent to the forensic laboratory in Surat.

Initial reports have said the peacocks died of a chronic respiratory disease.

The possibility of the cold wave sweeping the region and the lack of food and water due to the prevailing drought conditions having weakened the immune systems of the birds cannot be ruled out, experts said.
