Troops exchange fire at border
after month-long lull

After a month-long lull, Pakistani troops Wednesday fired heavily on Indian positions along the international border in Kathua, Jammu region, forcing Border Security Force personnel to return fire.

BSF sources said the exchange of fire lasted 10 to 15 minutes, adding that there was no loss of life or damage to property on the Indian side.

They said BSF jawans retaliated after Pakistani Rangers fired on Indian positions.

The firing from the Pakistani side came notwithstanding Islamabad's announcement to observe maximum restraint along the border in Jammu and Kashmir.

The shooting came just days after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee accused Pakistan of backing an alleged militant threat to attack his office.

Islamabad discarded the accusation as baseless and said it regretted the comments.
