RJD, SP members stage walkout in LS

Angry Rashtriya Janata Dal and Samajwadi Party members Tuesday walked out of the Lok Sabha, protesting against the closure of hundreds of industries in the Union capital, leading to unemployment of many workers and uprooting of slum-dwellers.

Raising the issue during zero hour, RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said thousands of workers had been rendered jobless following the closure of industries in Delhi and the people, who mostly came from eastern India, were returning to their villages.

Alleging that they were "victims" of bureaucracy, Singh said that their plight was in no way less than those hit by the recent quake in Gujarat.

Samajwadi Party members supported him.

Responding to the members' concern, Urban Development Minister Jagmohan said that the Delhi Government was acting on a directive from the Supreme Court and shifting polluting industries to industrial areas from residential complexes. His ministry was only acting as a supervisor, to ensure that the court's order was complied with, he said.

The Supreme Court had also initiated contempt proceedings against some officials of the Delhi Government for failure to obey orders, he said, asking the Opposition not to politicise the issue.
