Manipur Health Minister quits

In the first sign of dissidence barely 48 hours after ministry expansion, the Radhabinod Koijam government in Manipur was jolted on Sunday when Health Minister Nimachand Luwang said he had resigned and claimed two other cabinet ministers also followed suit.

Luwang told PTI that he, along with Co-operation Minister Kh Amutombi Singh and Veterinary Minister M Manihar Singh, submitted their resignation letters to the Chief Minister on Saturday evening.

Amutombi Singh and Manihar Singh were not immediately available for comments.

A senior Samata Party leader and considered a confidant of Koijam, Luwang said several members of Samata Party, which heads the People's Front coalition in the state, were 'not happy' at last Friday's ministry expansion as a number of senior leaders of constituent parties have been left out of it.

He said senior leader of Nationalist Congress Party Chungkhokai Doungel, who had all the way fought with other former opposition parties for the removal of ousted chief minister W Nipamacha Singh, was not taken in the ministry.

Luwang said while five of the six BJP MLAs were included in the ministry, five of the eight Manipur State Congres Party MLAs, who had left the Nipamacha Singh ministry and joined the opposition camp, were ignored.

Luwang said they had resigned from the ministry so that the likes of Dounrel and other MSCP members could be accommodated in the seven-party Front ministry.

The Chief Minister was not available for comment.

Sources close to the chief minister said Koijam was trying to pacify Luwang and other two ministers and assured them that their proposal to include Doungel and other MSCP members in the ministry would be considered.

Koijam had earlier said there was still scope for expansion of the 34-member Council of Ministers.
