Jogi, Marandi win assembly bypolls

Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand Chief Ministers Ajit Jogi and Babu Lal Marandi won the assembly elections in Marwahi and Ramgarh on Friday.

Jogi defeated his nearest BJP rival Amar Singh Khushro by a record margin of 50,000 votes in Marwahi.

Marandi bagged 54,310 votes, while his nearest rival, Nadira Begum of the Communist Party of India bagged 34,290 and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's candidate got 26,777 votes.

The Samata Party won the Asthawan assembly seat in Bihar. Its candidate Satish Kumar defeated his nearest Rashtriya Janata Dal rival Pushpanjay Kumar by a margin of 9,915 votes.

Kumar polled 58,257 votes while Pushpanjay garnered 48,342, according to the election office.

With this the National Democratic Alliance constituents won seven of the 10 assembly seats.

The by-elections to 12 Assembly seats, spread over nine states, were held on February 19.

The Bharatiya Janata Party bagged three seats, Samata Party one, Telugu Desam Party two and Shiromani Akali Dal one.

The Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party won one seat each in Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP wrested the Shahpur (Madhya Pradesh) and Hindoli (Rajasthan) Assembly seats from the Congress, while retaining the Sarsawan seat in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BSP candidate bagged the Siwalkhas seat (SC), unseating a Rashtriya Janata Dal rival.

The SP retained Bharthana, with its candidate Pradeep Kumar Yadav winning by a margin of 7368 votes over the BSP rival. The BJP came third.

While Ramdas Shivhare was the winner in Shahpur, Nathulal Gurjar got the voters' nod in Hindoli, a seat vacated by Congress' Rama Pilot after being elected to the Lok Sabha. The BJP candidate's victory margin was 13,189 votes.

In Andhra Pradesh, the ruling TDP retained the Giddalur and Badvel Assembly seats.

TDP candidate P K Vijayamma, daughter of late marketing minister B Veera Reddy won the Badvel seat, defeating her nearest Congress rival Siva Ramarishna Rao, a former MLA, by a margin of 19,375 votes.

TDP's P Sai Kalpana, the widow of Vijayakumar Reddy, who represented the constituency, defeated her nearest Congress rival M Peera Reddy, a former MLA, by a margin of 25,091 votes.
