NDA wins five assembly seats

National Democratic Alliance constituents shared five of six assembly seats, the results for which have been declared so far, even as Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi held on against nearest rival after the first round of counting in Marwahi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party wrested the Shahpur (Madhya Pradesh) and Hindoli (Rajasthan) Assembly seats from the Congress, while retaining Sarsawan in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

The Bahujan Samaj Party bagged the Siwalkhas seat (SC) in Uttar Pradesh.

While Ramdas Shivhare was the winner in Shahpur, Nathulal Gurjar got the voters nod in Hindoli, a seat vacated by Congress' Rama Pilot, after being elected to the Lok Sabha.

The BJP candidate's victory margin was 13,189 votes.

In Andhra Pradesh, the ruling Telugu Desam Party candidate Sai Kalpana Reddy returned from the Giddalur Assembly constituency, defeating Congress rival M Peera Reddy by a margin of 23,000 votes. The TDP retained the seat.

Another NDA ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) retained the Majitha Assembly seat as Rajya Sabha member and party candidate Raj Mohinder Singh Majitha defeated nearest Congress rival Swinder Singh Kathunangal by more than 16,000 votes.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of senior Akali leader and minister Parkash Singh Majitha last month.

In Marwahi, Jogi was leading over BJP rival Amar Singh Kusro by 20,625 votes at the end of the third round of counting.

A Lucknow report said the BSP wrested the Siwalkhas (SC) seat in Meerut district, unseating the Rashtriya Lok Dal after completion of counting in the first of three Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, where by-polls were held on February 19.

The ruling BJP retained the Sarsawan seat in Saharanpur district. Earlier, the election directorate there had said its candidate was leading by 1,809 votes after completion of 15th round of counting on electronic voting machines.

At Bharthana in Etawah district, the main opposition Samajwadi Party was leading by over 4,000 ballots against its nearest rival the BJP, while the BSP was in third position.

A Ranchi report said Chief Minister Babu Lal Marandi (BJP) was leading by 4194 votes over her nearest rival after the first round of counting of ballots in Ramgarh constituency. Marandi (BJP) is still a Lok Sabha member and is seeking his maiden entry to the Assembly.

Security was tight in view of the call by the Opposition to oppose the counting in protest against alleged irregularities during the by-poll.

According to official sources, the results are expected around 1900 hours.

The bypoll in Ramgarh was necessitated following the death of the Communist Party of India's Shabbir Ahmad Quraishi. His widow Nadira Begum is the party candidate in this byelection.

Former legislator Arjun Ram Mahato (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) has represented the constituency in the Bihar Assembly twice.

Earlier, counting of votes began across nine states amid tight security.
