Truce extension attempt to 'mislead' the world: Pak

K J M Varma in Islamabad

In a totally negative response to India's extension of the unilateral ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan said Thursday said it was "yet another attempt to mislead world opinion."

"The announcement by the Indian prime minister on an extension of the period of non-initiation of combat operations by Indian forces in Kashmir is yet another attempt by India to mislead world opinion," a statement issued by the foreign ministry spokesman said in Islamabad.

"Instead of responding positively to the initiatives taken by Pakistan for the reduction of tension and the commencement of a peace process on Kashmir, India has repeated its old allegations against Pakistan," it said.

Stating that a military solution to the Kashmir issue was "futile", the statement asked India to respond positively to "Pakistani initiatives for peace, permit the Hurriyat conference delegation to visit Pakistan and enter into a meaningful dialogue with Pakistan for a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions."

The statement, which was on expected lines, followed highly critical comments made by Foreign Secretary Inamul Haque attacking India.

Speaking at a meeting in Islamabad, he said the level of violence in Kashmir has not declined despite repeated extension of ceasefire by India and asked the international community to mount pressure on India to permit the Hurriyat delegation to visit Islamabad for consultations, followed by direct talks with Pakistan.
