Gujarat Cong president C D Patel dead

Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president C D Patel died in Ahmedabad Thursday morning after he suffered a massive heart attack, according to GPCC spokesman Jayantilal Parmar. He was 70.

He is survived by wife, a son and two daughters.

Patel was earlier admitted to a private hospital where he had undergone an angiography on Moday. Patel had the first heart attack on Tuesday and was since improving, Parmar told PTI.

Patel was the cabinet minister in the Chimanbhai Patel ministry for some time and was the state deputy chief minister when Chabildas Mehta assumed chief ministership after sudden demise of Chimanbhai Patel in 1994, Parmar added.

Patel, who belonged to the backward Coli Patel community, hailed from Navsari district in south Gujarat. A soft spoken Congress leader, he was a successful lawyer at his native place, the GPCC spokeman said.

Patel was twice elected to the Lok Sabha and he also represented the Jalalpore constituency of the Gujarat assembly for two terms during his long political career.

Patel's body would be brought to the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee office to enable people to pay homage to the departed leader. Later, it would be taken to Jalalpore in Navsari for the last rites, Parmar added.
