High court grants P V Ranga Rao bail

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh high court on Thursday granted conditional bail to Dr P V Ranga Rao, former minister and eldest son of former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, who faces a criminal case for allegedly cheating Tamil movie superstar Rajnikanth.

Justice Vaman Rao granted Dr Ranga Rao bail on executing a personal bond for Rs 25,000 with two sureties of like amount.

The judge also directed Ranga Rao to appear before the investigating authority at the central crime station of the Hyderabad City police every Saturday between 10am and 11am, except when he is undergoing treatment in any hospital.

Ranga Rao was arrested on February 3 in connection with a case of cheating Tamil movie superstar Rajnikanth to the tune of Rs 20.6 million on the promise of making a film on Sri Raghavendra Swamy.

Listed as accused number two in the case, Ranga Rao was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days by the twenty-first metropolitan magistrate, but shifted to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences the same day for treatment after he complained of chest pain.

Ranga Rao filed a bail petition on health grounds on February 6 before the metropolitan sessions judge, contending that he had undergone open heart surgery and was required to be under constant medical care. Counsel Sridhar argued that his client had a weak heart, having undergone open-heart surgery once and angiography twice and a sent implanted in the heart. Moreover, he is under the security cover of the Special Protection Group.

But Metropolitan Sessions Judge K B Bhanu rejected the petition on February 9 on the grounds that Dr Ranga Rao was already undergoing treatment at the NIMS, for which permission had been granted. The sessions judge also said that it would not be proper to consider the bail application as the investigation was in progress.

Subsequently, Ranga Rao filed a bail petition in the high court.
