India-Bangla border fencing
in Tripura to begin in March

The fencing of the 856-km Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura, aimed at checking cross-border movement of subversives, will begin in March.

The decision, taken at a high-level meet, followed the sanctioning of Rs 87.5 million by the Centre, S Nag, engineer-in-chief and secretary to the Public Works Department, told reporters on Wednesday.

In the first phase, a 40-km stretch of the border would be fenced in the sensitive West Tripura and Dhalai districts. Work on it would start by March 15.

The second phase would cover the 39-km-long border area between Jaleya and Boalkhali in south Tripura.

It is expected to cost around Rs 2.40 billion to fence the entire 856-km Indo-Bangla border with Tripura, Nag said.

According to the Indira-Mujib pact signed in March 1971, the border fence would have a 150-yard no-man's land between the lines of demarcation.

The height of the fence would be 2.6 metre and would be a dual one with criss-cross barb laying in between.
