Another Mine Flooded in Dhanbad, 1 Killed

In yet another incident of flooding of a coal mine, one worker died and 113 escaped unhurt at the Katras colliery of Bharat Coking Coal Limited in Dhanbad Friday evening.

This is the second coal mine tragedy in Dhanbad in a week's time. Only last Friday, Bagdigi mines controlled by BCCL were flooded trapping around 40 workers inside. All of them, barring one who was rescued on Thursday, are feared dead.

The tragedy at Katras has been attributed to the blasting of a water tank in a nearby mine.

Executive Director, Safety and Rescue, BCCL, K N Singh, however, refused to confirm the worker's death and said rescue operations are on.

Eye witnesses said there is very little chance of the survival of the trapped worker.

"We are always fighting danger...there is nothing extraordinary. We fight nature everyday," Singh said.

Sources said BCCL officers haven't yet reached the flooded mine fearing angry protests from the workers.

Two tragedies in a week's time, meanwhile, have raised serious questions about the safety standards in BCCL mines.
