No going back on J&K ceasefire: Mahajan

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Cabinet Committee on Security is unlikely to revoke the ceasefire in Jammu & Kashmir, which the Government of India had extended till February 26.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan told rediff.com, "Although I am not a member of the Cabinet Committee on Security, my conversation with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee has made it obvious [to me] that Vajpayeeji wants the ceasefire to continue till the date of extension."

The unilateral ceasefire from the Government of India has come under severe strain after six Sikhs were killed in Srinagar on Sunday.

"I think the ceasefire is going to stay," Mahajan said. "The pressure being built by the opposition parties led by the Congress is not going to have any affect on the government's decision."

Mahajan argued that while there was violence in some parts of Jammu & Kashmir, the borders were relatively quiet, which is why the chance of the ceasefire being withdrawn prematurely is remote.
