Talwandi blasts Farooq for firing on Sikhs

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee president Jagdev Singh Talwandi on Tuesday lambasted Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and his administration for opening fire on Sikh demonstrators in Jammu on Monday.

Talwandi met Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Tuesday morning with Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and registered a strong protest against the incident.

Six Sikhs were killed on Saturday by terrorists while another was killed in Jammu on Monday when police opened fire on people demonstrating against the atrocities of the Kashmiri militants.

"We have been reduced to second-grade citizens as militants are killing Sikhs in Srinagar and police are killing Sikhs in Jammu. The government has failed to provide protection to Sikhs even though the J&K government had specifically assured the minorities living in the valley of protection after the Chattisinghpura massacre," Talwandi told rediff.com

Talwandi is scheduled to address a press conference later on Tuesday evening.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who is president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, also registered a protest with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Home Minister Advani.

The three-member fact-finding team comprising Dhindsa, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Chamanlal Gupta and Sardar Tarlochan Singh, vice-chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, which visited Srinagar and Jammu on Monday, will submit its report to Advani on Tuesday evening. Later they are scheduled to give their assessment of the situation to Vajpayee.
