Hum sub thik hai: Trapped miners

The five divers, flown in from Bombay on Sunday morning succeeded in reaching the miners at 1630 hours after searching for an hour and a half, Coal India Limited sources said in Dhanbad.

The divers descended into the mine at 1400 hours (IST) and emerged briefly for ten minutes bringing word that they had managed to establish contact, the sources said, but could not specify if all the 38 miners, including two official of Bharat Coking Coal Limited's colliery were alive.

The divers entered the mine through Jairampur colliery's pit number five.

As soon as the navy divers re-entered the mine at 1500 hours, a flurry of activity began at the pithead with coal workers and relatives of those trapped rushing to the area.

A medical team comprising 12 doctors had also entered the pit with medicines and blankets.

CIL Director (Technical) N K Sharma, Superintendent of Police Abdul Gani Mir and Deputy Commissioner Vinod Kispota, were also at the pithead.

The miners, were trapped when the barrier separating Bagdigi and Jairampur collieries breached at 1215 hours on Friday with 60,000 gallons of water surging in.

A second naval team of divers from Visakhapatnam left for Dhanbad from Calcutta by road and was expected to reach in the early hours on Monday, the sources said.
