Three notorious gangsters, who escaped from the Nawada jail on Sunday morning, were killed in a gun battle with police in the Kawa Kol hills of the district late on Sunday evening.
The three killed have been identified as Akshat Singh, Brajesh Singh and Rupesh.
However, the notorious Ashok Mahto, the main accused of the Afsar massacre case of June 2000, and seven of his accomplices, who had escaped from the prison, in the process killing one sentry and injuring another, are still at large.
Police officials said that after the shoot out in the jail Mahto and his accomplices escaped in a mini truck, which was parked outside the prison.
In their hurry to get away, they ran over two persons on the National Highway 31 near Akbarpur block of the district killing two people.
Mahto and his men then abandoned the mini truck and snatched a jeep parked on the roadside and sped away southward on the same road.
But, after a few kilometres it met with another accident. Four persons were injured.
The criminals then left the jeep and hid in the nearby hills.
A police party headed by superintendent of police G S Gangwar encircled the hills and in the subsequent exchange of fire three of the escapees were gunned down.
Police sources said that about two dozen visitors came to meet Ashok Mahto in the jail on Sunday morning.
They brought a basket of fruits for him, which reportedly had guns hidden in them.
Mahto shot into notoriety when he along with some Kurmi gangster attacked Bhumihar dominated Afsar village and killed 13 family members of another underworld don, Akhilesh Singh, husband of NDA-supported independent MLA, Mrs Aruna Devi.
