Senator Brown condemns attack on Parliament, asks US support

Democratic Congressman Sherrod Brown, co-founder of the India Caucus, on Wednesday condemned the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament and asked the United States to support India.

Describing India as the United States' 'closest ally' in South Asia, Brown said, "It is in difficult times such as these when friends and allies must step forward and lend support. The United States and India enjoy a close bond of friendship."

"Prime Minister Vajpayee, and all of India, offered their deepest regret during the tragedies in New York and Washington only a few months ago. It saddens me that my colleagues and I must now reciprocate that gesture," Brown said.

Brown, on Tuesday, had co-signed a letter along with other members of the Congressional India Caucus to Prime Minister Vajpayee offering their sincerest condolences concerning the attack.

Brown supported the administration's decision to offer India the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and of the state department counter-terrorist teams to bring to justice those individuals responsible for the December 13 terrorist attack.

He also called on the Bush administration to employ a more balanced approach in regard to India and South Asian policies.
