Collision averted between Rajdhani, Kanchenjunga Exp trains

A head-on collision between the Guwahati-New Delhi Rajdhani Express and the Sealdah-Guwahati Kanchenjunga Express was averted on Wednesday when an alert gateman stopped the two trains near the Bharalumukh gate crossing between Guwahati and Kamakhya railway stations in Assam.

P K Parida, gateman of gate number four of Bharalumukh, exploded detonators in front of the advancing Guwahati-New Delhi 2435 Rajdhani Express to stop the train, which was running on the same track on which the 5657 Sealdah-Guwahati Kanchenjunga express was coming from the opposite direction.

According to sources in the North East Frontier Railway, Parida exploded detonators and turned the signal back to red to stop the advancing trains and thus averted a major disaster probably saving hundreds of lives.

The Kanchenjunga Express had left Kamakhya railway station and due to 'wrong operation of point', the train went to the adjacent track on which the Rajdhani super fast train was coming, sources said.

The NF railway authorities have suspended four railwaymen for 'dereliction of duty' and ordered an inquiry by senior departmental officers. The suspended railwaymen are: assistant station master of Kamakhya cabin J C Nath, driver of Kanchenjunga Express S N Prasad, diesel assistant P Gohain and guard P Kalita, all belonging to Alipurduar division.

The authorities also announced rewards for Parida and Akhtar Islam, assistant station master of Guwahati cabin.
