Parties should come together on national issues: Pawar

Stating that the era of coalition politics was here to stay, Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar on Wednesday stressed the need for political parties to come together on issues of national concern.

"Political parties, sinking their differences, should join hands on important national issues," Pawar, who turned 61 on Wednesday, told mediapersons in Mumbai.

"At a time when regional political parties are assuming significance, and days of single party rule over, there is no escape from coalition politics," the Maratha strongman, whose party shared power with Congress in Maharashtra, emphasised.

Strongly refuting reports that organising a mega birthday bash was an attempt to bring him to the centrestage of national politics, he said, "I have been in the state assembly or Parliament for over 35 years now."

Pawar said it is wrong to attribute any political motives to his birthday celebrations.
