NCP cuts 61-feet long cake on Pawar's birthday

Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar, who turned 61 on Wednesday, began his birthday celebrations in grand style by cutting a huge cake weighing about 610 kg, at 'Rashtrawadi Bhavan', the party headquarters, in south Mumbai.

Pawar, accompanied by his wife Pratibha, was felicitated by party workers on his arrival at the NCP office, amid chants of 'Sharad Pawar zindabad'.

The 'S' shaped confectionery showcased a combination of rural and urban Maharashtra, and depicted a typical village with women fetching water, a bullock-cart, lush green crops and a sugar factory on one side and industrial townships, spread of Information Technology and Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai at the other.

Sixtyone feet long and three feet broad, the cake was prepared by food technologist and NCP activist Dilip Patil, and about 15 people worked on it for the last fortnight, it is learnt.

The Maratha strongman then proceeded to Ramtek, the official residence of deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, to accept greetings from the public on his birthday.
