Abdullah Adbullah comes home to family

The otherwise unnoticeable first floor of C-4, Kailash Colony, in south Delhi witnessed a historical event on Wednesday, when the foreign minister-designate of Afghanistan, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, visited his wife and children.

Abdullah's family has been staying here since 1998.

Abdullah's brother-in-law was in the dimly lit house, apart from the beeline of journalists. As soon as he arrived, he dashed in saying "tomorrow afternoon" to newsmen who urged him to speak.

But as the scribes persisted, he came out again. "It is a great pleasure to be back in the family... I am coming after a long time," the senior leader of the Northern Alliance said.

Asked if he was planning to take his family back, Abdullah quipped, "You did not give me the time to discuss it."

Calling his visit personal-cum-official, Abdullah said he would be in India for "just a few days".

His wife and three children -- Laila, Zhohra and Ghazal-- did not come out to face the cameras.

Abdullah had emerged during the war in Afghanistan as the main spokesman for the Northern Alliance.

Coming from the Tajik heartland of the Panjshir Valley, Abdullah is of mixed ethnic parentage, as his mother is a Pushtoon.
