Stray incidents of violence, mostly directed against vehicles and shops, were reported from many parts of the state as the dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Hindu Aikya Vedi to protest violent incidents in Pathanamthitta disrupted normal life in Kerala on Monday.
The hartal was called to protest violence by miscreants on Friday in Pathanamthitta, in which several shops and vehicles and devotees bound for the annual pilgrimage to Sabarimala were attacked.
Over a dozen workers of the National Democratic Front and the People's Democratic Party have been arrested since Saturday, in connection with the incidents of arson and violence in the district.
This morning, police sprayed rubber bullets at hartal enforcers in Kanhangad, in northern Kasaragod district, while stoning of vehicles was reported from Alapuzha, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Both state government and private bus services, as also autos and taxis, stayed off the roads, impacting on attendance in offices across the state. Shops and business establishments also remained closed in all parts of the state, while a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions.
Security has been stepped up and prohibitory orders are in force in areas designated as sensitive.
