Samajwadi Party MP demands Amar Singh's expulsion

Discontent within the Samajwadi Party over the style of functioning of its leader Amar Singh came to the fore again on Saturday when a party Member of Parliament Bhal Chandra Yadav demanded Singh's expulsion to 'save the party from losing the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections'.

The demand comes close on the heels of the expulsion of two SP MPs for raising their voice against Singh.

In a four-page letter to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, the MP from Khalilabad said that whatever issues the expelled party MP from Azamgarh, Ramakant Yadav, had raised were shared by most of the party leaders and workers.

Bhal Chandra Yadav said in the letter that the 'active role' of Amar Singh, the party's general secretary, was becoming intolerable among partymen, and people were often heard saying that the SP was being run by film stars and scam-tainted capitalists.

He said party workers often questioned the 'mysterious activities' of Singh and said that during the days of Lohia and Charan Singh, such controversial characters were not seen.

Asked to comment on the letter, Amar Singh said he had not seen the letter, and would give his comments only after going through it.

Bhal Chandra Yadav also said people were pointing their finger at the growing 'dynastic rule' in the party and the Mulayam's failure in containing such activities.

He said if people like Amar Singh were not expelled from the party, it would not be able to retain its current strength in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, what to talk about forming government.
