The Orissa high court has issued a notice to the state government in connection with the sexual abuse of an undertrial in a district prison.
"The court has issued a notice to the inspector general of prison following allegations of sexual abuse by an undertrial prisoner in a district jail," official sources said.
They said that in response to a letter by a 19-year-old that hardened criminals had subjected him to sexual abuse, the court had asked the concerned officials to submit a report.
Fearing threat to his life, the petitioner had asked the court to conceal his identity.
This is the first time that a case of sexual abuse of an undertrial has come to light in the state.
More cases may come to light once the government begins a probe, the sources said.
The undertrials in state jails live like slaves of hardened criminals. The overcrowded wards add to their misery.
There are 68 jails in the state, including four circle jails, two special jails, districts and sub jails.
