A six-member group of Lok Sabha MPs, the Indian Federal Democratic Party, led by P C Thomas has pledged its support to the National Democratic Alliance government, the party announced on Saturday.
The convener of the IFDP, Pappu Yadav, said that a letter signed by three MPs -- Thomas, deputy leader Mohan Delkar and Yadav himself -- was sent to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday.
A copy of the letter was also sent to NDA convener and Defence Minister George Fernandes, he said.
Claiming that two other MPs belonging to the IFDP -- Anwarul Haq and Sukhdeo Paswan -- had already sent letters extending their support to the Vajpayee government, Yadav said another MP from the northeast was out of station.
In the letter to the Prime Minister, they said, "We are confident that your leadership is most essential for the country. We have decided to support you and the NDA."
With the six-member party extending support to the NDA, the strength of the ruling coalition goes up to 310 in the Lok Sabha, which has an effective strength of 537.
