Third claimant to 17th Karmapa title to visit Rumtek Sunday

Dawa Sangpo Dorjee, the third claimant to the 17th Karmapa's throne, will visit Rumtek monastery on Sunday to make another bid, amid warnings by police not to enter the headquarters of the Karma Kagyu sect of Buddhism.

Police threw a tight cordon around the monastery to prevent any untoward incident.

Dorjee's followers urged the Sikkim government to take the initiative in solving the Karmapa issue and said the other two claimants -- Urgyen Thinley Dorjee and Thaye Thinley Dorjee -- had been 'intimated' to be present on Sunday at Rumtek for 'necessary tests' to prove their 'authenticity'.

Any attempt by Dorjee and his followers to enter the monastery will be foiled, superintendent of police, Sikkim (east district), warned.

Anand Lama, one of Dorjee's supporters, however, clarified: "The Karmapa will deliver his message to his followers and return."

He said there was no plan to 'raid' or 'gatecrash' the monastery.

The Sikkim-born Dawa Sangpo Dorjee is the third claimant for the 17th Karmapa's post lying vacant since 1981 when the 16th incumbent died.

Among the other two, Urgyen Thinley Dorjee, recognised by the Dalai Lama for the chair, fled Tibet to reach India early last year and Thaye Thinley Dorjee, a candidate of a rival faction is now reportedly based in Delhi.
