Dr Ketam Desai resigns from AIIMS' institute body

Dr Ketan Desai, the sacked president of the Medical Council of India, has "voluntarily" resigned from the institute and the governing bodies of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, sources said on Saturday.

The institute on Saturday received a communication from the health ministry saying Desai had "voluntarily" quit from the two posts, the sources said.

The chief of cardio-thoracic centre at the institute, Prof P Venugopal, who was nominated a member of the institute and the governing bodies, had replaced Desai, they said.

Health Minister and AIIMS president Dr C P Thakur got Desai's resignation letter on December 3, the sources said.

Desai also ceased to be the chairman of the standing selection committee of AIIMS, responsible for selecting faculty and senior officers, they added.

Eve since the Delhi high court held Desai guilty of corruption and irregularities, the faculty at the institute had been demanding his resignation.

The court had ordered the removal of Desai as president of the Medical Council of India and directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to prosecute him.

The court also observed that the apex body for doctors was a "den of corruption".
