Barring stray incidents of stone throwing on state-owned buses in some parts of Tamil Nadu, the dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Congress and the Left, to protest the steep hike in power tariff, bus fares and PDS prices, passed off peacefully on Friday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, an ally of the DMK-led National Democratic Alliance in the state, did not participate in the bandh, though it has expressed its displeasure about the price hike.
While a top state government official described the bandh as a 'flop', DMK chief and former chief minister M Karunanidhi said it was a 'success'.
Director General of Police B P Nailwal said police fired in the air to disperse an unruly mob at Sangilipatti in Dharmapuri district.
Over 12,000 persons, including one Communist Party of India member of Parliament and 14 members of the state assembly, were taken into preventive custody.
Nailwal said the strike evoked 'poor response' as buses and trains ran their normal schedule. Essential services such as milk, water and power supply remained uninterrupted.
