Kumaratunga invites Wickremesinghe to form govt

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Friday invited the leader of the opposition United National Party, Ranil Wickremesinghe, to form a new government after his party swept parliamentary elections this week.

The two have scheduled a meeting on Saturday.

Kumaratunga's People's Alliance was routed in Wednesday's election, and she will now have to contend with a hostile parliament controlled by UNP.
