LS adjourns for the day

Amidst vociferous protest from the Opposition benches demanding an apology from the government for not allowing Congress chief whip P R Dasmunshi to speak, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Opposition members raised the issue five Bharatiya Janata Party ministers attending a meeting where Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Ashok Singhal declared that the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya would commence on March 12 next year.

Amidst the chaos, the Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed allowed Congress chief whip P R Dasmunshi to speak.

Despite this, National Democratic Alliance members insisted that procedures be followed and that the MDMK's Vaiko be allowed to speak first.

However, Sayeed stuck to his stand saying "I have given the floor to Dasmunshi. If you don't accept it, I will adjourn the House."

When the din continued, Sayeed adjourned the House till 1400 hours (IST).

As soon as the House re-assembled after lunch, Congress and other Opposition members were on their feet refusing to allow the House to function till the government tendered an apology.

A visibly annoyed Dasmunshi said, "Till the government does not express unconditional apology, we won't cooperate in any manner."

He was supported by Raghuvansh Prasad Singh (RJD), Ramjilal Suman (Samajwadi Party), Rashid Alvi (BSP) and others.

Even as Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed requested the members to allow regular business to be conducted, Opposition members continued to protest from their seats without moving into the well.

As the uproar continued, sensing the mood of the members Margaret Alva, who was in the chair, adjourned the House for the day.
