Dr Abdul Kalam accepts chair at Anna University

Shobha Warrier in Madras

Dr Abdul Kalam, till recently the principal scientific advisor to the Indian government, has accepted Professorship of the Padmashri T Muthian Chair at the Anna University, Madras.

Padmashri Muthian was a visionary in technical education in Tamil Nadu.

Dr Kalam is known the world over as the father of the Indian missile programme, and was instrumental in India becoming a nuclear power.

He has for long evinced keen interest in India becoming a developed nation, an industrial power house and technology leader by 2020, and spearheaded technological development in the country.

He has been awarded the highest India civilian honour -- Bharat Ratna.

In his new assignment, Dr Kalam plans to meet young school children in India, and promote scientific awareness in society.

He has always used every opportunity to interact with children, in promoting the scientific temper.

He has maintained that it is through kindling interest in science in children that India can forge ahead and become a leader in science and technology.

Dr Kalam would also closely associate with the teachers and students of Anna University in dealing with technological advancement linked to transformation of society.

Prof A Kalanidhi, vice chancellor of Anna University, said his institution would make use of Dr Kalam's services in enriching the teachers, scientists and engineers.

Anna University traces its lineage to the oldest engineering college in India, the Guindy Engineering College, established in 1794.
